Fire with Explosions

A chocolate evening. Clumps of motionless chestnut trees. The springy elasticity of shiny automobile tires. The streets look almost like a day off. Aluminum roe deer are running along them. Movement itself breaks off from the rhythm of the me-passing cars. The electric openness beckons in an intimate, French-chanson way. In a broad gesture an elegantly doffing head passes swiftly. A young lady touches the folds of her matte-colored clothes secretly and silently. Each city block glistens in thousands of dissimilar traits and facial expressions. A flashing tramcar turns toward us from a lonely street. The crowd watches a random drama on the corner. Someone shouted, getting confused, “Don’t take it any more.” Someone was dragging an unconscious lady across the street. And suddenly there was a noise. and automobiles flew in from somewhere. A crescendoing scandal created a traffic jam. Locomotives exhausted themselves blaring their train whistles. Disordered horns were laughing. Everything got mixed up in the fast-shifting city block. It seemed that right now all the buildings would fall down again. Splashing window glass would cover the street. The lights would run together into an eerie, starry shower. And from all sides corpses would be piled on the railroad tracks. The drivers have stopped their horses, and the horses’ hooves scratch the paving stone. The tram cars bunch, wagon on wagon. The quality of the light itself is changing. The street is shrouded in gasoline smoke. Life simply lost its mind, as if the Pharoah arrived in an automobile. No one understands where history started from. With horror the leaflet seller rereads the Bible. And the old woman with the basket fell, and yelled, “Let it be soon already!” And carcasses in top-hats poured onto the sidewalk in wholly unwarranted fashion. Red automobiles arrived wearing helmets of flame. Terrifying tongues all by themselves were torn from wide windows. And flaming cries with shocking short pauses. As interval, meter, and continuity were lost. Coordinated streams, creating clouds of vapor, hissed. Collapsing stone buildings buzzed in localized fires. And the stone buildings next door were lost in thought, While explosions hung in the air and nonetheless, incoherent, deafening screams pierced through. The sky blackened with indifferent mysteries and sternly the stars stared at the stubbornness of our ruins. The cityscapes metamorphosed in fast, unending sequences. The city rushed to take its regular doses of aspirin. Always came newer and newer messengers. And the stars got lost behind cheap curtains of cloud. And it seemed that from the despair-inducing stress I could crack. And it seemed this fire would for eternity cause splotching on my soul.
